I wasn’t surprised to see some things I had read before but they were worth reading again. I appreciated learning new things and seeing them in a new way. Ambrose reveals for the first time anywhere that the intricate plan for the invasion of France in June had to be abandoned before the first shot was fired. Battle engagements, combining attack and defence, are triggered and highlighted.

This one covers the soldier’s stories from WW II. A deluxe edition with news journalists’ photos of the sites would be an easy five stars.
Having not read the other books of Stephen Ambrose on the Second World War, I find this volume that features sections from his various books on the subject good, as it still presents the continuity of the big story. It has so much material covered in his lengthier works. The episodes first aired in on HBO. What inventions, medical break throughs, politically, or teachers were lost?

Though our military has learned much fro The only reason that I did not give this 5 stars is that Ambrose borrowed heavily from D Day, Citizen Soldiers and Band of Brothers, all of which I have previously read. Even the new material, mostly dealing with Eisenhower and hi Ambrose amrose a superb writer with an undeniable talent for shedding light on the terrible price paid by those who libor the epic battles of WWII.
Ambrose quotes a passage from the speech on his book’s first page; this passage is spoken by Carwood Lipton in the series’ finale. This is the essence of command. I noticed that several other reviewers were unhappy with the fact that this is a compilation of Ambrose’s other books but the liner notes on the edition I read made it clear that it was drawn from his other works.
Because there is so much personal testimony, there is real pace and action to this book and an immediacy that bridges the last 65 years effortlessly which in itself is a remarkable achievement. There are literally hundreds of first hand accounts of what happened and so the picture painted is authentic, genuine, gritty and certainly strips you of any illusions of glamour that ambrosee may be about war.
I’d recommend The Victors to anyone who hasn’t read Ambrose before, everyone else reader beware.
Ambrose is relatively even-handed with his praise and criticism to all sides including the Germans, although he evidently didn’t rate the British General Montgomery. The true story of D-Day, as Ambrose relates it, is about the citizen soldiers – junior officers and enlisted men – taking the initiative to act on their own to break through Hitler’s Atlantic Stephe when they realised that nothing was as they had been told it would be. Anecdotes, observations and insights into his formative years would help.
Ground troops landing on Utah beach were relying on Easy Company to secure one of the causeways that were vital if the troops were to get off the beaches and dw the solid ground of Normandy. I encourage you to buy it, read it, and be enlightened. I cannot believe sometimes that people can come through combat sane. Ray Bocarski, fluent in German, lit up, sat down in an easy chair, got a befuddled German operator on the phone, and talked his way through to a military headquarters in Berlin.
Recommend that one highly as well.

I’m so pleased that Dick Winters sought to complete the circle with this wonderfully written and factual account of Echo company and the hero’s that comprised it.
